Natalia Dadiani (Godlevschi) (1865 – 1903)

Teacher, politician, princess. She became a Dadiani through her marriage to Prince Beglari Giorgi Davit, a descendant of a noble family from Abkhazia, and became a promoter of girls’ secondary education in Bessarabia. She graduated with a gold medal from the Narodavskaya Girls’ Gymnasium (School No. 1 for Girls), and taught geography there until she set up her own school. In 1894, the school run by Princess Dadiani was still operating in an old, uncomfortable and cold building. In 1900, she started the project and built an imposing building with her own funds.
Her contribution here was so significant that the institution was transformed into an eight-class gymnasium, subordinate to the Ministry of Public Education, and named “Gymnasium for Girls No. 2 in Chisinau, founded by Princess Dadiani”.
She was buried at the Armenian Cemetery in Chisinau, next to her son, who died prematurely. On her tombstone, which has been preserved to this day, is written: “To the tireless worker in the field of women’s education, the unforgotten Princess Natalia Dadiani, from collaborators and friends”. Today, a high school in the Buiucani sector of Chisinau bears her name.
