Chișinău Municipality Joins the European Sustainable Tourism Project SUSDEST-NET

The Chișinău City Hall is joining the European sustainable tourism project “Sustainable Destinations Black Sea Network – SUSDEST-NET”, developed to address the shared challenges of the Black Sea Basin region, which includes Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Türkiye.
The initiative aims to transform these tourist destinations into sustainable, competitive, and attractive areas, supporting the blue economy and strengthening the profile of the Black Sea Basin region as a whole, as well as each sub-region individually. This will be achieved by promoting sustainable practices, improving environmental quality, social equity, and economic viability.
These efforts will play a key role in attracting responsible tourists, stimulating local economies, and preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Black Sea Basin region, in its entirety and within each sub-region, for future generations.
SUSDEST-NET is financed by the European Union through the INTERREG NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme. The project was officially launched on 4 November 2025 and will be implemented during 2025–2028 (with project activities scheduled to conclude on 3 May 2028).
The project will develop a common sustainable tourism policy and strategy, providing a harmonized framework to guide relevant practices.
The overall objective of the SUSDEST-NET Project is to promote ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) sustainability principles for five tourist destinations in the region, each of which will establish a Destination Management Committee (DMC).
During the implementation of the project, special attention will be given to the active involvement of local communities, including suburban areas, as well as all relevant stakeholders, ensuring that sustainability initiatives are inclusive and meet the needs of all parties involved.
All project results will be made available online for any interested parties.
Transnational cooperation is essential for addressing the common environmental, social, and economic challenges of the Black Sea Basin. By working together, project partners will harness diverse expertise, share best practices, and develop innovative and effective solutions tailored to different tourism contexts. This cooperation ensures a broader impact and contributes to the overall sustainability of the region.

The total project budget amounts to 1,415,719.10 EUR, structured as follows:

·         1,274,147.15 EUR (90%) – contribution of the European Union

·         141,571.95 EUR (10%) – contributions from project partners

Financial involvement of Chișinău Municipality:
The total amount allocated for Chișinău’s implementation of SUSDEST-NET activities is 223,245.22 EUR, of which:

·         200,920.69 EUR will be reimbursed to the municipal budget by the project leader — the Municipality of Kavala (Hellenic Republic), from EU funds, after each reporting period;

·         22,324.53 EUR represents the Municipality’s non-reimbursable contribution (10% of the total allocated budget).

    Through this project, Chișinău Municipality is taking a strategic step toward the future, strengthening its position on the European map of smart and sustainable cities. In doing so, the municipal administration reaffirms its firm commitment to modernizing public services and transforming the capital into a modern and attractive tourist destination, in line with European values.
