Toma Ciorba (1864-1936)
An illustrious humanist doctor hailing from Bessarabia, Toma Ciorba was a graduate of the Medical Faculty at the University “St. Vladimir” in Kiev. He served as a medical doctor in Chisinau and gained recognition as the initiator and designer of the Infectious Diseases Hospital, a role he held for over 30 years. Ciorba was distinguished by his sensitive and compassionate approach towards patients. Viewing the sick as individuals in distress rather than mere sources of income, he earned the nickname “doctor without money.”A pioneer in the field, Ciorba introduced a locally produced chickenpox vaccine, advocated for mandatory antiviral vaccination across the country, and utilized serotherapy in treating diphtheria patients. His commitment extended to the training of paramedics, midwives, and charity assistants, showcasing his dedication to healthcare education. Chisinau residents, deeply appreciative of his qualities, aptly characterized him as a “Knight of humanity.”

In enduring gratitude, the memory of this eminent doctor lives on through the Infectious Diseases Hospital, which bears his name, and a nearby street named in his honor.
