The Legend of the Byk River
Once Upon a time in our lands, along with people, there lived Giants. They were tall as poplars, for them every hill was a trifle, and the old Tiras passed it in three steps. The women of people carried their children 9 months in their belly, and the Giants – 99 months. That is why the Giants were fewer and fewer, and there was less and less place found on this Earth for them to be had…
One day, a giant girl, who still did not know about the existence of people, saw a man driving a cart pulled by an ox. The girl went to her parents to ask them about the strange creature. They told him about people and the fact that, according to the will of the gods, soon the Giants will disappear at all, and people will take over the whole earth, like ants. Full of hatred, the giant girl decided to find the man in the wagon and kill him. After long searches to no avail, she began to cry so hard! The water of tears reached the cart and drowned the cart and the Ox. It is said that the girl’s tears turned into a river, and the locals called the river “Byk”, because that’s how all the neighboring nations called The Ox. Since then the Byk River flows, crossing Chisinau – once wide and deep with floated ships and full of cargo, but now small and clouded by the care of the past years… And only it reminds us that once in Moldova there were Giants …
