Maria Bieșu (1935 – 2012)
Opera singer, soprano and lied from the Republic of Moldova. She debuted as a soloist in the folk music band “Fluieraș” with the song “Struguraș de pe colina” at a district competition, alongside the famous Tamara Ciobanu and Serghei Lunchevici.
He gradually switched from folk music to opera, taking a job in 1962 after a competition at the Chisinau Opera. Destiny gave her an exclusive chance to exploit her talent on stage when, on the eve of the opening of Puccini’s “Tosca”, the leading lady of the role fell ill and Maria Biesu was proposed as an understudy. The soloist’s debut on the stage of the Opera Theatre took place on 28 April 1962. Her success was recognised by specialists and spectators alike, as well as by the theatre, which began to prepare a special repertoire for her.
In 1965 the young soloist did an internship at the renowned La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy. It was here that her Italian-language lead roles in the operas Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Aida and The troubadour were born.
In 1967 she won the title of “Best Cio-Cio-san” at the Miura Tomaki International Competition (1st Tokyo, Japan).
During her life she has performed on the most important opera stages in the world.
Maria Biesu was the initiator of the First International Festival of Opera and Ballet Stars, entitled “Invite Maria Biesu” (September 1990).
After her death, the name of the Festival was changed to “Maria Biesu” International Festival. Today this event has become a symbol of culture in the Republic of Moldova, and Chisinau – one of the capitals of opera music in Europe.
On 18 May 2012, just a few days after the death of the prima donna, the Government of the Republic of Moldova decided to name the Opera and Ballet Theatre after Maria Biesu.
A commemorative plaque has been installed on the wall of the house where he lived (62 A.Mateevici Street).
She was buried at the Central (Armenian Cemetery) in Chisinau, alongside other eminent personalities of the country.
