Petre Teodorovici (1950-1997)

Petre Teodorovici was born on May 18, 1950, in the city of Leova, in the family of music teacher Cristofor Teodorovici, being the second child in the family. He graduated from the local secondary (music) school, where he studied the violin (1968), then studied at the Stefan Neaga College of Music, music theory section (and composition with Eugen Doga), and at the Faculty of Choral Conducting of the Gavriil Musicescu Institute of Arts in Chisinau (1968-1973). Initially he was employed as an educator-teacher in Leova (1971-1972), then – teacher at the Pedagogical Institute Alecu Russo in Balti (1972-1973). Later he became a director at the Iuri Gagarin Youth Centre in Chisinau (1974-1975). He worked as artistic director of the ensembles Bucuria of the National Philharmonic (1975-1982), Ceremoș (with the participation of sisters Rotaru Aurica and Lidia) of the Chernivtsi Philharmonic (1983-1984) and Ecou of the Chisinau Youth Centre (1984-1989).

Over the years he wrote a number of songs that quickly became popular hits, including “Santa Maria Maggiore”, “Our Writing”, “Come Home”, “Romantica”, “Last Hour”, “Summer in Soroca”, “My Friends”, “Seniorita Gratia”, “Blue Evening”, “I Come from the Mountains of Latinia”, “I Love You, Romanian People”, “Basarabia”, “Let the Bessarabian Boys Across the Prut”, “Why?” and “Why?”. “, “Rose”, “Farewell”, “Everlasting Love”, “The Bridegrooms’ Moment”, “Irena”.

He was open to collaborations, thus, many of his songs were written on lyrics by Grigore Vieru, Dumitru Matcovschi, Simion Ghimpu, Anatol Ciocanu, Ion Hadârcă and performed by Gheorghe Țopa, Nina Crulicovschi, Angela Ciumac, Ion Suruceanu, Anastasia Lazariuc, Nadejda Cepraga, Sofia Rotaru, Gabriel Dorobanțu and others.

His songs have been performed at music festivals in Slovakia, Finland, Cuba, Argentina, Italy, Russia, Romania, Moldova and have been interpreted by famous artists from different countries.

Petre Teodorovici has also written music for films and shows, such as for the musical comedy “Liola”, based on Luigi Pirandello’s play. In 1989 Petre Teodorovici was awarded the title of Emeritus Master of the Arts and in 1996 he was made a Knight of the Order of Labour Glory (1996).

Petre Teodorovici died on 5 July 1997 in Chișinău at the age of 47 from an incurable disease…
